The film revolves around Clay, a shy high school student from California who returns from school to find a box waiting at yous door. It contains seven cassette tapes recorded cy Hannah Baker, a collegue that he had a fall. Before her suicide, Hannah sent the tapes him with instructions to forward them to a list of students as a chain. The tapes are to explain to 13 people as they played a role in his death.
